Hospice & Palliative Care

At Saint Therese, Every Moment is Meaningful

Facing a serious illness or terminal condition is difficult. Because we know how stressful and uncertain this time can be, we strive to provide comforting, holistic hospice and palliative care in a peaceful place founded on love and compassion.

Just as during other chapters, important decisions must be made regarding medical care and your loved one’s wishes throughout the final pages of his or her story. At Saint Therese, we consider the whole person – their physical, emotional, social, intellectual and spiritual needs. We offer two holistic, supportive approaches to comfort care. Both our palliative care and hospice care manage symptoms and pain of serious illness with spiritual support as requested. In addition, hospice care provides positive, compassionate support for terminally ill residents.

Our person-centered care goes beyond clinical needs and emphasizes a celebration of love and life. Care providers form close, personal bonds with residents, their families and their friends—empowering each of them to honor every day as they choose. We provide 24-hour skilled nursing with daily assistance such as meal preparation, dressing and medication management. Because family members and friends wish to spend as much time as possible with their loved one, our hospice and palliative care services are surrounded by peaceful settings, both indoors and out, ideal for gatherings, rest and reflection.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How does hospice and palliative care manage symptoms?

We provide enhanced care through symptom management, pain control, spiritual support and unconditional love in a restful environment. This holistic approach serves to alleviate worry and apprehension for both our resident and their loved ones, allowing families to spend time together, creating precious memories and celebrating life.

  • What’s the difference between hospice and palliative care?

Hospice and palliative care at Saint Therese have fundamental components in common: compassionate care and a commitment to quality of life.

Palliative care does not depend on life expectancy and is often pursued at the same time as curative efforts. It’s for anyone living with a decreased quality of life due to symptoms and pain of chronic illness or ongoing treatments.

Hospice is for terminally ill residents as diagnosed by a physician citing a prognosis of about six months or less. When choosing hospice care, focus shifts completely from medical treatment to comfort measures and bereavement support.

  • Does insurance cover palliative and hospice care?

Hospice and palliative care services are typically covered by most insurances, including Medicare , but it may not cover room and board. Contact us to learn more about various financing options specific to yours or your loved one’s needs.

  • Could I become addicted to my pain medication?

Our skilled hospice nurses specialize in administrating and monitoring medications used for pain management. Using the right dosage of prescribed medication heightens quality of life for residents with chronic or life-limiting illness—promoting sleep, relieving stress and anxiety, reducing rehospitalization and easing a multitude of physical discomforts.

Your physician will prescribe the proper medication and dosage for effective pain management while our skilled nursing team will properly manage medication while making sure your personal needs and preferences are met. Most palliative and hospice care residents maintain Saint Therese residency for up to six months—which isn’t typically long enough to develop an addiction if medication is properly managed by a care team. With that being said, the more common concern expressed is the fear a resident will be overly medicated and unable to enjoy the time they have with their family and friends.

Take comfort in knowing Saint Therese works closely with your loved one, your family and any preferred medical teams to coordinate the right services and medications to support your loved one’s journey through hospice or palliative care. Contact us to learn more.

  • If I help my loved one move into hospice care, are we “giving up”?

It’s not easy to discuss serious illness or end-of-life with your loved ones. Making the decision to begin hospice care is a difficult, emotional process. Choosing hospice care does not mean you’re giving up. It means you and your loved one have decided he or she is deserving of the very best experience possible—with compassionate, personalized clinical and emotional support.

In addition, this allows you to move from caregiver to quality family time with your loved one to create lasting memories.

  • How do I know hospice is the next step?

Once a physician and his or her patient have decided to stop curative treatments, hospice is a resource available to help maintain an ideal quality of life.

Individuals with terminal illness need much more than symptom management and pain control. Because our work is our calling, Saint Therese is wholeheartedly committed to empowering our residents to live as they choose in an environment of support, comfort and love. We offer residents and their family members a host of support beyond clinical needs including pastoral care services, ongoing bereavement support and more. Let’s talk about how we can support your next steps.
